Carvings by Francis Leekya (Deceased)
Many Native American tribes use fetishes for luck, power and protection. They use them for healing, hunting, spiritual and ceremonial purposes. The Zuni's are the acknowledged masters at carving fetishes from a wide variety of stones, shells and other materials. Many members of other tribes will travel to Zuni to purchase or trade for their fetishes. For the Zuni's, and others, the fetishes possess the power of the animal that the stone resembles. This belief comes from the Zuni creation story in which the twin sons of the Sun Father struck the animals with lighting to turn them into stone. This was done to protect the people from being harmed by the animals. Deep inside the stone the animals were kept alive in their hearts so they could use their powers to help humans.
Our fetish pages are always a work in progress. Due to the turnover in fetishes these pages will always be changing.
