Hopi Pottery Bowl by Zella Cheeda

Hopi Pottery Bowl by Zella Cheeda

Circa 1960's

2-1/4" high by 4-1/2" in diameter

$300.00

We believe Zella Cheeda, a Hopi potter known as Antelope Woman made this bowl. It was made and bought at the Hopi village of Sichomovi circa 1960. Zella was an active potter from about 1950 until 1980. Her favorite designs used to decorate her pottery were rainbirds and parrots. Zella has some pieces of her pottery on display at the Museum of Northern Arizona. This bowl by Zella is well made, symmetrical and in nice shape for its age. There is some surface wear, but the squash blossom design used to decorate this pot is still very clear. There are no chips or scratches on this pot. Zella Cheeda appears in Gregory Schaaf’s book Hopi- Tewa Pottery. This pot is 2-1/4” high by 4-1/2” wide. It is signed with Zella Cheeda’s hallmark, an antelope. You can see a reverse image of this hallmark in Dr. Schaaf’s book. Our investigations as to the potter’s identity have included Greg Schaaf, Ron McGee, Dr. Ed Wade of the Museum of Northern Arizona and Alph Secakuku of Second Mesa.
