Here is one of Nona’s best. This seedpot is painted
with a very beautiful and complex butterfly design. Within the butterfly wings
are corn, lightning, water, feathers and many other patterns. The seedpot
measures 4-7/8” in diameter by 2-1/4” high. Nona’s teachers,
according to Greg Schaaff in his book Hopi-Tewa Pottery, were
Rainy and Helen and Sylvia Naha. Also, according to Dr. Schaaf, Nona produces
some of the thinnest walled pottery at Hopi. Because the hole in this seedpot
is only a large pinhole on the bottom, you cannot see inside to see how thin
the pot is. But when you pick it up, it’s lightness is surprising. Nona
has won numerous awards for her pottery, and her art is becoming more and
more in demand. This is also reflected in her rising prices as discriminating
collectors are seeking out her work. The pot is new and in perfect condition.
The light spot in the photo is a reflection.
