Laguna Pueblo is located 42 miles west of Albuquerque,
New Mexico. Laguna Pueblo is made up of descendants of refugees from the nearby
Pueblos of Zia, Jemez, Sandia, Cochiti and Santo Domingo who fled from the
Spanish conquerors in the late 1600's. The pottery produced at Laguna is similar
to Acoma pottery but is slightly thicker, has bolder geometric patterns and
is tempered with sand rather than old pottery sherds. By 1960 almost no good
pottery was made in Laguna until Evelyn Cheromiah and her family began the
revival of making good pottery in Laguna once more. Since the 1970's fine
pottery is once again being made in the Laguna Pueblo.
