This is a beautiful example of the Raised Outline rug. Raised
Outline rugs are noted for their three dimensional effect created by adding
additional weft threads and adding a backstitch to thicken certain parts of
the design element. This style originated in the Coal Mine Mesa area southeast
of Tuba City. Lena has been weaving since the 1970's. According to Greg Schaaf's
book, "American Indian Textiles," Lena, and Larry Yazzie, her half-brother,
are credited with being the innovators of this style, called Blue Canyon in
honor of Larry's birthplace. Lena was taught by her mother, Susie Begay and
her father, Keith Begay. This piece has an estimated weft count of 44-48 wefts
per inch, and estimated warp count of 8-9 warps per inch and is new.
