Hopi Pottery

Hopiland, surrounded by the Navajo reservation, is home to many members of the Nampeyo family. Nampeyo was the matriarch of contemporary Hopi pottery. She began making pottery around 1880, and her extended family continues that tradition today. Some family members' work appears much more contemporary, but the pottery is still made using the traditional ways. This means digging the clay, cleaning and preparing it, rolling it into coils and shaping the coiled clay into the pottery. The clay is then hand smoothed and hand polished using gourds and stones. Designs are then applied by painting. Finally the pots are fired, usually in open pits fueled with sheep dung. We are pleased to offer here some of the fine quality work of the artists of Hopi.
